課程概述

This course intends to equip graduate students with fundamental skills of writing English for academic purposes. The course starts with important elements in paragraph writing, moves on to essay development and discusses five common rhetorical modes.
Essential grammar for academic writing and collocational learning of vocabulary are also covered. Every weekly session consists of two hours of lecture on writing and one hour on grammatical functions. In-class writing exercises and take-home assignments are given to enhance students’ familiarity with the skills taught in this course. 

課程目標
By the end of the course, students will
1. Understand common rhetoric modes in academic writing.
2. Apply their knowledge of grammar function to their own writing.
3. Demonstrate familiarity with vocabulary frequently used in academic writing.
4. Edit and proofread their own and their peers’ writing. 
課程要求
1. Students are required to attend all classes. No more than three excused absences are permitted.
2. Active participation in class discussions is required.
3. Quizzes and a comprehensive final exam are included in this course. No make-up quizzes/exam will be allowed.
4. Writing assignments are carefully scheduled as stages toward the fulfillment of the course’s objectives. Late assignments will not be accepted.

Participation 20% λ Students practice writing skills regarding paragraph and essay development. λ Students share ideas via individual responding to reading, peer reviews or group discussions.
